Initial Discovery

Design Challenge

Approximately 74 billion transactions worth Rs 125.94 trillion were conducted using UPI in 2022.

Design a Universal Transaction History app for UPI, balancing data privacy and information overload.

National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI)

As a user who juggles multiple UPI payment apps, I struggle to see my overall financial picture:

My transactions are scattered across different apps, making it difficult to track my spending habits and budget effectively.

I constantly switch between apps to check balances and pay bills, leading to a frustrating and time-consuming experience.

The lack of a unified view of my finances makes it hard to plan for the future and achieve my financial goals.

Market UX/UI Research

I conducted a comprehensive analysis of major players in the Indian UPI market. Currently, individual UPI apps provide transaction history only within their own ecosystems. Due to limitations in technology and regulations, no major player currently offers a true Universal Transaction History App for UPI.

Improvements

No single app offers a universal view of all UPI transactions.

Limited data sharing and API standards hinder a unified experience, Users juggle multiple apps, leading to fragmented financial insights.

The first step was to develop a comprehensive understanding of the future app's structure and hierarchy by creating a spider diagram that included all entities and actions. After the Google product team approved the structure, we used it as the basis for creating high-fidelity wireframes for the entire app.

Here are some design approaches that served as the foundation for the whole system design.

1. Unifying Finances with Seamless Data Aggregation

Users must feel confident granting data access from various UPI apps. We delve into the design process of integrating various UPI accounts securely, creating a user-friendly system for categorising transactions with head categories and sub-categories, and empowering users with tools to gain valuable financial understanding.

2. 'Multi-Card Management'

With a user-friendly interface under the 'Multi-Card Management' head category, easily navigate through different cards and accounts on a unified account page. Delve into the 'Expense Insights' sub-category, where transactions are intelligently categorised into various expense categories for a comprehensive financial overview.

Impact

The app built revolutionises financial management by offering a Universal Transaction History, providing users with a consolidated view of all UPI transactions across multiple platforms for seamless and comprehensive budgeting.
